The Moose Jaw Housing Authority offers affordable living for
older adults with low-to-moderate incomes in
professionally-maintained buildings. The buildings are located
in the heart of the city and close to many amenties. Every
attempt is made to ensure security of home and person: each
buildings has security doors with an intercom system to your
suite, on-site caretakers in most buildings, fire prevention
programs and organized fire drills, as well has sprinkler
systems throughout each building. Of course, all buildings
have elevators for ease of movement and a ‘buddy system’ you
may wish to utilize for your own personal safety.

You have several options:
-
Pick Up: Applications are available at our office at
255 Caribou Street West;
-
Mail: If unable to come to our office, phone our
office and we will mail you an application which you can
complete and return by mail;
-
Download: Download and print the application
available on our website, complete it and either bring or
mail it to our office;

The rent for adults 55 and over is rent-geared-to-income or
RGI rent. Because rent is based on income, income must be
thoroughly verified. We will photocopy any of the information
we need at our office at no charge to you.
Please provide:
• A copy of your most
recently filed income tax return;
• Most pension cheques
are directly deposited to banks. If you receive one or more
pensions, provide your most recent bank statement, or a copy
of your most recent cheque(s);
• If you have an earned
income, provide the most recent pay stub(s).
The application form must be filled out in its entirety,
including the landlord references and listing all of the
household members. If you are not able to answer some of the
questions, just answer to the best of your ability.

Once the application and all necessary information have been
received at our office, the Tenant Relations Officer will
contact you and arrange a time of mutual convenience to meet
with you in your home. During this home visit, the Tenant
Relations Officer will assess your needs for housing and
answer any questions or concerns you may have.
If you live out of town, the Tenant Relations Officer will
phone you and conduct an interview over the telephone.

There are various considerations when it comes to how long it
will be before you can move. They may include:
• What apartments are
available;
• Any physical, social or
financial needs that are making your move necessary;
• The condition of your
current accommodations,
• Your current
accommodations, and your ability to afford these
accommodations,
• The gross monthly
income of all members of the household,
You have some control over how long you wish to wait. If you
are not concerned about which building you move to, for
example, you may have an easier time being placed than an
applicant who prefers a certain building, floor height, etc.
This is particularly true if there are no vacancies in the
building or on the floor you wish to move to.

Saskatchewan Assisted Living Services (SALS) is a support
service option for persons living in the Moose Jaw Housing
Authority apartment buildings. Services that are available on
a fee-for-service basis are:
• Meals: For $9.50 * per meal, one hot, nutritious meal
per day is served in the dining room (Monday through Friday).
Currently meals are served at High Park Towers and Victoria
Towers and Temple Towers
-
Housekeeping & Laundry: For
$15.00*
per hour, regular
cleaning, cleaning stove and fridge/deep freezer, washing
walls, cleaning windows and other seasonal cleaning. Laundry
services include: wash, dry, iron, fold and sort personal
laundry, sheets, towels and bedding of designated tenants,
The Moose Jaw Housing Authority co-ordinates SALS services
between the tenant and the contractor that provides the
services. An Activity Worker is available during the day and
will discuss your needs and requirements with you.
*Note: “All rates are effective 1 January 2012 and are
subject to change.”

Selling your current home
Q. If you are planning to sell your home, you may be
concerned about leaving it empty while waiting for it to sell
or that it may sell so quickly that you could be left without
a place to live. You may wonder if you need to wait until your
house is sold before applying for an apartment with MJHA.
A. This is a very common situation for many older
adults and the MJHA has had extensive experience in handling
this situation. Your best course of action is to contact the
MJHA and speak with the Tenant Relations Officer and explain
your circumstances. She will be happy to discuss with you the
best way to handle a move. Rest assured, you will not be left
out in the cold!
Physical restrictions
Q. You may wonder what happens if you were to fall, for
example, and could no longer manage without a walker? Would
the MJHA expect you to move out?
A. You would not be required to move out. Although
independence is always a requirement, the MJHA facilities are
most accommodating to the needs of older adults. SALS services
(meals, housekeeping and personal response systems) are
available to help take some of the load off the tenant. You
are also free to make arrangements with any outside agency
that you feel could be helpful to you.
