The Moose Jaw Housing Authority offers healthy, safe and
affordable housing at a variety of locations throughout the
city of Moose Jaw. Depending on availability houses and apartments are assigned according to
the size and needs of the family. All units, whether detached
houses or apartments, meet the high standards of the
Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and delivered by our
professional maintenance staff.

• Family housing is for single or two-parent families with one
or more dependant children.
• Applicants must be either a Canadian Citizen or a Landed
Immigrant.

The Moose Jaw Housing Authority has a large portfolio of
family housing units throughout the city of Moose Jaw
consisting of:
• 2, 3 and 4 bedroom houses (bungalows, 1 1/2 storey, and
two-storey),
• 2 and 3 bedroom apartments,
• 3 and 4 bedroom townhouses.

Rent varies depending on gross household income and is
calculated using a graduated rental scale provided by
Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. This method is called
“rent-geared-to-income” or “RGI.”
Rent can be adjusted monthly to fluctuate with income or if
income is fixed, then rent can be set at a fixed amount based
on that income. If income changes at any time, your rent may
be adjusted accordingly.
Families receiving social assistance will pay a set amount
that has been determined by Department of Community Resources.
As a general rule, rent will not exceed 30% of your gross
household income.

Utilities include power, energy and water. Expenses like
telephone, cable TV, internet, etc. are not considered to be
utilities and are always the responsibility of the tenant.
Depending on where you live, responsibility for utilities
varies. If you live in a detached or semi-detached unit, you
will pay all the utilities directly to the utility company.
If you live in a multi-unit complex or apartment, as a rule
you will be responsible for power only. In some limited
instances, the tenant will also be responsible for water.

The Moose Jaw Housing Authority does not allow pets in any
MJHA unit.

Applications are available at our office, by mail or by
downloading the application form and returning it to our
office.
Since rent is based on income, verification of all gross
household income must be submitted when applying for housing.
Verifiable income documents depends on your circumstances and
will include things such as:
• A copy of your most recent pay stub or stubs, if more than
one job;
• A copy of your most recent social assistance cheque;
• A copy of any pensions, or other income you may be
receiving;
• Your most recent bank statement;
• A copy of your most recently filed income tax return;
The application must be filled out in its entirety, including
the landlord references and listing all of the household
members.
Once the application and all appropriate information has been
received at our office, the Tenant Relations Officer will
arrange a time of mutual convenience to do a home visit.
During this home visit, the Tenant Relations Officer will
assess and discuss your housing needs with you.

Applicants are placed according to need, not in the order of
first-come, first-served; when the Tenant Relations Officers
does the home visit, she may be able to give you an idea of
waiting time. The following issues are considered in
determining priority for housing:
• The gross monthly income of all adult members of the
household
• Your current accommodations, and your ability to afford
these accommodations,
• The condition of your current accommodations,
• Availability of suitable housing units.
Applicant preferences will also be a factor in speed of
placement. For example, if an applicant wishes to remain close
to current day care or school, the wait may be longer because
there may not be vacancies in that particular area of the city
when the applicant initially applies. You may need to consider
what compromises you are prepared to make, if any.
Once approved, applicants are always given enough time to give
a proper “Notice to Vacate” to their current landlord.
